Chapter Seven

Suz braked to a stop near the back door of Bliss House and let out a jerky breath.

She’d held it at bay—thinking, feeling, being—as she drove around the lake. She’d barely breathed, keeping every sense, every conscious thought on her driving and pushing back the unconscious with every bit of her will.

Now it all came in, intoxicating her…. This couldn’t be right, could it? This sense that her body had found a new pulse, a new rhythm? As if it had become a series of clocks and they were all set to Max Time. Tick-tick-tick. Breath, heartbeat, the heat at her core—oh, most definitely there—all wound up and keeping time to something Max had set in motion.

She wasn’t naive, wasn’t inexperienced, but the way she felt with Max… And that was from kissing. If he really touched her, if they ever…

The clocks ticked faster.

He felt it, too. She didn’t doubt that. But he didn’t want to feel it, so he fought it.

If they could just go to bed… Men were notorious for no-strings sex. If she could have that with Max, she’d take it and be more than satisfied. Just until the end of this project. And then they could go back…

It wasn’t the idea of returning to being treated like Max’s kid sister that stopped the fantasy. It was trying to imagine Max playing his role in this scenario. Men might be notorious for no-strings sex, but Max? No way. Max who’d had his heart broken by that idiot girl in college. Max who kept honorable polished bright and visible on the mantel.

It would have to be a relationship for Max. A real relationship. On a level where he would see her with absolute clarity. Even if she could batter down Max’s reluctance, she couldn’t let that happen.
